The driving school instructor, now called a driving and road safety teacher, practices a profession regulated by the state. Accessing this job requires obtaining a specific diploma, fulfilling strict administrative conditions, and choosing an appropriate working framework. Each step conditions the next, with no shortcuts possible.

Professional Title ECSR: the diploma that replaces the BEPECASER

The professional title ECSR (Driving and Road Safety Teacher) is the only diploma recognized for teaching driving in France. It has replaced the former BEPECASER and consists of two certificates of professional competencies, called CCP.

CCP1 covers training for safely driving a light vehicle. CCP2 focuses on raising awareness among road users within the framework of road safety. To obtain the complete professional title ECSR, both CCPs must be validated.

The training takes place in a center approved by the ministry responsible for employment. Its duration varies according to the organizations, but it includes periods of internship in driving schools. Access does not require a prior university diploma, making this path accessible for professional retraining.

Important detail: teaching without this title is prohibited, even with extensive driving experience. The diploma certifies pedagogical skills, not just driving skills. The job sheets available on the 1 Emploi site for becoming an instructor detail the concrete prerequisites before committing to this training.

Administrative conditions to obtain teaching authorization

The professional title ECSR is not enough to practice. Once the diploma is obtained, the future instructor must request a teaching authorization issued by the prefecture of their residence department. This authorization takes the form of a card valid for five years, renewable.

Obtaining this card requires fulfilling several simultaneous conditions:

  • Holding the professional title ECSR or a recognized equivalent diploma by the administration.
  • Possessing a valid driving license for the relevant category (license B for light vehicles, complementary categories for motorcycle or heavy goods vehicle).
  • Not having been subject to certain convictions recorded in bulletin no. 2 of the criminal record.
  • Satisfying physical fitness conditions, verified by an approved doctor.

The renewal of the authorization is not automatic. Since 2026, driving schools must provide proof of a knowledge refresh training when applying for the renewal of their prefectural approval. This requirement reinforces the need for continuous training in the profession.

Employee or independent: two distinct working frameworks

Once the ECSR title is obtained and the teaching authorization issued, the instructor chooses between two statuses. This choice has direct consequences on daily life, remuneration, and administrative obligations.

Employee instructor in a driving school

The majority of driving teachers start as employees. The employment contract (fixed-term or permanent) binds the instructor to a driving school holding a prefectural approval. The employer provides the dual-control vehicle, manages the schedules, and handles the administrative procedures related to the activity.

Salary depends on the collective agreement, experience, and geographical area. Schedules often include evening slots and Saturdays, times when student demand is highest.

Independent instructor

Working independently requires creating a legal structure (micro-enterprise, SASU, EURL, among others). The independent instructor must own their own dual-control vehicle and take out appropriate professional insurance.

This status offers freedom in managing schedules and rates, but also involves client prospecting, accounting management, and compliance with all regulatory obligations. The operator of a driving school, which goes beyond simple teaching, must also obtain a prefectural operating approval, distinct from the teaching authorization.

Driving License B at 17 and saturated schedules: what changes on the ground

Since January 1, 2024, the driving license B can be obtained at 17 years old in all pathways, including the classic pathway. This change has broadened the pool of candidates taken on by driving schools.

On the ground, some agencies are noticing a lasting influx of very young candidates. Schedules are becoming saturated and exam delays are being pushed back, sometimes by several months. For instructors, this means a concrete adaptation: managing waiting lists, finer distribution of driving hours, prioritizing students close to the exam.

The demand for qualified instructors remains strong in most departments. This pressure on staffing makes the profession attractive in terms of job placement, but it also involves a heavy workload, with few free slots during school periods.

The path to becoming a driving teacher follows a precise sequence: obtaining the professional title ECSR, securing the prefectural teaching authorization, and then choosing between employment and independent activity. Each step has its own timelines and documentary requirements, and the obligation for knowledge refreshment reminds us that training does not stop at the initial diploma.
